How Much Does a Curl Bar Weigh? EZ, Olympic & Fixed Curl Bar Weights

Short answer: most Olympic EZ curl bars weigh between about 17 and 25 lb, standard 1-inch curl bars are usually lighter, and fixed-weight curl barbells weigh exactly what's printed on the end. Here's how much each type of curl bar weighs, why it matters for your training log, and how to check the bar you already own.

Curl Bar Weight at a Glance

How Much Does an Olympic EZ Curl Bar Weigh?

An Olympic EZ curl bar is much shorter than a full 7-foot barbell — usually around 47 inches — and takes 2-inch Olympic plates. That shorter shaft is why it typically weighs 17–25 lb rather than the 44–45 lb of a men's Olympic bar. The TROY TOZ-47 E-Z curl bar lists 17.2 lb, while the heavier-duty TROY SBCB-47 Supra Olympic curl bar lists 25.2 lb and is rated to 200 lb of plates.

How Much Does a Standard (1-Inch) Curl Bar Weigh?

Standard curl bars use 1-inch plates and are built lighter, so they often land around 10–15 lb depending on length, collars and finish. Spin-lock versions include threaded collars that add a little weight. Because standard bars vary so much, check the manufacturer's spec rather than assuming a number.

How Much Do Fixed-Weight Curl Barbells Weigh?

Fixed curl barbells have the plates permanently attached, so the number on the end is the total weight — bar and plates together. Commercial sets typically run from 20 lb up to 110 or 115 lb, often in 10 lb jumps, such as the TROY TZB-R 12-sided rubber curl barbell. There's nothing to add up: a 40 lb fixed curl bar weighs 40 lb.

Why Curl Bar Weight Matters

Many lifters either count only the plates on a curl bar or assume it weighs the same as a 45 lb Olympic bar. Both make your log inaccurate — one undercounts by up to 25 lb, the other overcounts by 20 lb or more. Knowing your bar's real weight keeps progressive overload honest, especially on lighter arm work where a few pounds is a big jump.

How to Check Your Curl Bar's Weight

  • Look for a stamped or printed weight on the sleeve or end cap.
  • Check the product listing or manual — most list the bar weight in the specifications.
  • Weigh it: stand on a scale holding the bar, then subtract your body weight.
