Bench Press Bar Weight: How Much Does a Bench Press Bar Weigh?

Short answer: the bar on most commercial bench presses is a men's Olympic bar that weighs 20 kg (44 lb) and is commonly counted as 45 lb. Women's Olympic bars weigh 15 kg (33 lb), and standard 1-inch home bars, technique bars and Smith machine bars can weigh far less. Here's how to tell which bar you're benching with and how to add up your real total.

Bench Bar Weight

"Bench bar" usually just means whichever barbell sits on your bench press rack, so the weight depends on the bar, not the bench. In most commercial gyms and school weight rooms it's a 7-foot men's Olympic bar at 20 kg (44 lb), which is why lifters round it to 45 lb. In home gyms you'll also find 6-foot Olympic bars, 15 kg women's bars and 1-inch standard bars, all of which weigh less. If the bar isn't marked, don't assume โ€” check the spec sheet or weigh it.

Why the 45 lb Rule Doesn't Always Hold

A men's Olympic bar weighs 44.1 lb, so "45" is a rounding convention that's close enough for most training logs. The problem comes when a lighter bar gets counted as 45 lb: a 15 kg women's bar is about 12 lb lighter, and a standard home bar can be 20 lb or more lighter, which makes your bench numbers look bigger than they are.

How to Calculate Your Total Bench Press Weight

  1. Start with the bar's weight โ€” for example, 45 lb for a men's Olympic bar.
  2. Add every plate on both sides of the bar.
  3. Add the collars if they're heavy. Competition collars weigh 2.5 kg each, while spring clips are negligible.

Example: a 45 lb bar with one 45 lb plate and one 25 lb plate on each side totals 45 + 90 + 50 = 185 lb.

How to Check Your Bar's Weight

  • Look for a weight stamped or printed on the sleeve or end cap.
  • Check the manufacturer's spec sheet or product listing.
  • Weigh it: stand on a scale holding the bar, then subtract your body weight.

Choosing a Bench Press Bar

For commercial gyms and school weight rooms, a 20 kg Olympic power bar is the standard choice for benching. Lighter 15 kg bars suit youth programs and lifters who prefer a thinner grip.
