Dumbbells Direct · Independent gym guide
Explore strength gyms in Washington.
A researched guide to independent gyms, lifting equipment and visitor access.
Washington's strength scene is dominated by personal-training and semi-private studios, which makes a true open gym harder to find than you would expect in a city this size. Olympic weightlifting turns out to be the clearest way in. In Petworth, a 24/7 open gym shares its building with a competitive weightlifting team; in Shaw, about a mile from the White House, a strength club sells an open-gym day pass; and on Fourth Street NW, a barbell club takes drop-ins at its coached sessions. All three are independent, single-site businesses.
Petworth Fitness
Petworth Fitness runs classes, but the reason it is here is the 24/7 open-gym membership, which needs no classes at all. DC Weightlifting Club, a competitive Olympic weightlifting team, trains in the same building.
Memberships are month-to-month with no contracts, and the class timetable covers strength, controlled weightlifting, rowing and running.

Prefer to train at home?
Between the commute and the calendar, some weeks the gym just doesn't happen. A set at home covers those weeks: pick up a dumbbell set and train at home, or add kettlebells if your space is tight.
