Dumbbells Direct ยท Independent gym guide
Explore strength gyms in San Antonio.
A researched guide to independent gyms, lifting equipment and visitor access.
Most of San Antonio's independent strength gyms sit on the north and west sides of town: near the airport, along NW Military Highway, out on Huebner Road by Loop 1604 and on the West Side. One of the five here breaks the pattern, a short way south of Downtown. The range between them is wide. One runs a 20,000 sq ft building with another 15,000 sq ft of outdoor training space, while another only opened in 2025. You will find a competition platform, strongman yokes and a cold plunge among them, and every one sells some kind of short-term pass, so you can try a gym before committing to it.
Elysian Strength
Elysian opened in 2018 and now has 20,000 sq ft indoors plus a 15,000 sq ft outdoor gym. For powerlifters, the centerpiece is an IPF-certified Eleiko competition platform, and there are more than 55 strength machines besides.
It is also a HYROX affiliate, and you can drop in without joining.

Heavy Metal Fitness
This is the strongman gym on the page. Wheelbarrows, sleds, yokes and farmer's handles share the floor with bands, chains, chalk and specialty bars, and there is plenty of room to squat, bench and deadlift.
Heavy Metal also has an area it calls The Yard, runs group classes and events, and sells day passes for visitors.

War House Gym San Antonio
War House's San Antonio gym is home to the War Machines, equipment Atom Steel designed and built for the gym. It is staffed around the clock, and the gym caps its membership numbers.
Visitors can buy day and week passes after getting in touch first. The same business runs a second War House in San Diego.

Excalibur Barbell Club
Excalibur opened on the West Side in 2025, built by a lifter who couldn't find a hardcore 24/7 strength gym there. The layout is simple: an open floor up front, an iron zone at the back, a garage area and a posing room.
It is open 24/7/365 on month-to-month plans, and a three-day pass lets you try three different sessions before you decide.

Texas Iron Gym
Texas Iron Gym is built around strength training and bodybuilding on a full commercial line of equipment, with trainer Luis Acuna leading the coaching.
Recovery is the twist: a cold plunge kept at around 48 degrees that members and non-members can book. Day passes are sold online, and VIP members can train 24/7.

Prefer to train at home?
There will always be days when the gym is a drive too far. Keep a few pieces at home for those: start with free weights for home, and add kettlebells for swings and carries that fit in a small space. If you are supplying a commercial gym, our wholesale page covers bulk orders.
